Highway Department
The Barnes County Highway Department is responsible for the efficient planning, design, construction and maintenance of roads, bridges and culverts within the County of Barnes. The Department provides for the overall management, direction, coordination and budgeting for approximately 330 miles of County black top and gravel roads. There are 20 full-time employees and 3 part-time seasonal employees on staff.
Barnes County is now an active member of the LoadPass Permit System.
For travel on Barnes County Roads, please purchase over size, overweight permits directly through LoadPass Permit System at https://permits.loadpasspermits.com/Account/Login . If you are a user or subscriber in LoadPass and you wish to receive notifications directly from Barnes County about changing road information, please go to your profile and select them in your notifications group.

Seasonal Load Restrictions update: 7:00 AM, May 14th, 2025.
Seasonal restrictions are lifted on all Barnes County asphalt roads except for Barnes County 27 South (Peak Road). Barnes County gravel roads are restricted to 6 ton per axle and truck 35 MPH.
Barnes County 27 South (Peak Road) will remain restricted at 6 ton per axle and trucks 35 MPH until further notice.
